Configuring power options

He did a quick demo in our session about configuring Power Schemes; here's the breakdown in more detail. Read it from his blog here: You used to be able to control power management in Vista using native policies however the advanced targeting of preferences now enables lot of new scenarios with power savings. This allows you to apply more aggressive power plans to your workstations after hours but then then back off during the day when people are working.

Configuring power options

In the course of my career as a database administrator and consultant, I've never had anyone tell me that their database or database server was too fast.

It's all too common for people to complain about slow application performance and often jump to the conclusion that any performance or scalability issue must be caused by your database server. Quite often, many application and database performance issues are actually caused or aggravated by inappropriate SQL Server installation and configuration.

I want to give you the best practices and tools that you can use to help prevent your SQL Server instance from being a performance or scalability bottleneck. I also want to show you how to properly configure your operating system and hardware for SQL Server usage.

This is module two: So what are we going to cover in this module? We'll start off talking about the multiple tasks that you actually have to complete before you install SQL Server This includes things like installing the operating system, patching the operating system, and actually configuring the operating system properly for the best SQL Server experience.

Then we'll get into things you have to do at the hardware and BIOS level to make sure you're going to get the best performance and scalability out of this instance. You're going to need an account for each SQL Server service for the different components you're running, such as the database engine and SQL Server agent, and other things such as reporting services or analysis services that you might be installing.

These should be regular domain user accounts in most cases, they don't need to be any kind of special domain admin account. You're going to need the name and the password for those accounts during installation.

If you do that, it's a little bit more work up front, but then you don't have to worry about changing the password on your regular user accounts, and they're actually easier to manage in the long term.

Configuring power options

We'll start off talking about how important it is to use a standardized naming scheme for your LUNs, next, I'll talk about the different SQL Server workload types, and how that's going affect how you decide to configure your storage.
